Love the dark rich color. Love that you added more protein! I’ve never tried that in cookies. Great idea.

They look YUM to the tenth power…and speaking of power, I’ll bet they’d be perfect for “powering” one through the morning for breakfast or on an afternoon hike!!! Your recipe “fertility” NEVER ceases to impress me!!!! By the way…do you recommend any particular protein powders? There are so many to choose from and I plan on purchasing a container or two on our triip to the U.S. this summer..Whey isolate or concentrate, egg white….casein…??

These look and sound great, I am not sure about the protein powder though. I try to stay away from processed products, can I omit it?

I’m so impressed with how much protein you packed into these between the power and the egg whites! Awesome :D And I’m so glad you satisfied your oatmeal cookie cravings!

Is it okay baking like that with protein powder? I am a Lapband patient and I have inquired about using my whey protein powder to cook with and was told that once you heat the whey, the proteins start to break down…

    Perfect!

My girlfriend is super-focused on beating cholesterol through diet and these might be great for her to have an indulgence.

Thanks again! Glad I came by your blog!

    Sonia,
I tried this recipe today. The flavor is wonderful and the nutritional information, which I calculated myself, allows me to eat as many of these without feeling guilty. Thanks for sharing :)

Wow! This recipe is crazy good! I’m one of those people who are genetically incapable of following a recipe exactly, so I made these cookies with what I had on hand:: gluten-free baking mix, 1 scoop of vanilla egg protein powder, less cinnamon, and real eggs…before I put them in the oven I wondered what was supposed to make them sweet…tasted the batter and it was good…cookies turned out fluffy and delicious! So it seems you can easily go either way with the protein powder. :) This is a fantastic discovery, and it’s nice to know it isn’t one of those fussy recipes that the least little goof will wreck! Thanks so much !

Wow – I must be the only one who thinks these cookies taste like cardboard. I made them for my grandaughter, who doesn’t get much protein in her diet. Sorry, but I just didn’t like the taste. Way to bland.

Well this was my first try at healthy oatmeal cookies. I followed the directions exactly but they were not very sweet and the kids, husband and myself did not really care for them. Maybe it had to do with the type of protein powder used but not a repeat for us. The dogs like them :) .

Sounds great! I have two suggestions … use hemp protein and for more sweetness add truvia. If they are too dry, wouldnt adding more apple up the moistness?

I made these last night and they were great! Thanks so much! Added a few chocolate chips to part of the batch – that was good too. A challenge I find with healthy recipes is a bit of “sponginess” (but not really in a good way) – can you tell me how to get less sponginess? Is this from cooking with applesauce instead of shortening?

I just made these for my daughter as she is a competitive swimmer and needed something to give her for the meet…I made two changes for the kids taste which were to omit the raisins and increase the cranberries to one cup and added a couple teaspoons of orange zest (as we live in Florida). Baked as you said and they kids just ate one each and gave two thumbs up! Thanks for the healthy high protein snack for our swim meet this weekend!

I made these last night and unfortunately they were not very good! I think that maybe I used too much protein powder??? Can you specify how many grams each scoop of the protein powder should be? I used three 30 gram scoops and maybe that was too much?

They ended up tasting quite bland and spongy!!!

I made these tonight and they were delicious! I’m a little surprised that anyone could find these bland. I found the measure of dried fruit to be so generous for the amount of batter… every bite had a ton of raisins and cranberries in them. How can that possibly be bland?

I had to do a little improvising. I had forgotten to buy applesauce, but then I remembered I had some glasses of baby food, so I “borrowed” some sugarless apple/banana puree from my son. Yum! Oh, I also discovered that my husband accidentally bought “rum” instead of vanilla, so inspired by a comment above I went with orange extract. It worked SUPER well with the cranberries. The protein is so great. I need more cookie recipes that actually give me a sensation of fullness.

    Hi Sonia,

I am so glad that I stumbled across your blog! I made these cookies tonight and I can’t believe how good they are!!! I didn’t have vanilla protein powder on hand so I used chocolate and it’s incredible how close to the real thing they taste. Thank you so much for sharing! This will for sure be one of my go to receipes for post or pre work out snacks. :)

Saw this on pinterest. Very curious to try, but I am curious where the “sweet” is suppose to come from. We aren’t an “all organic” kind of family. Maybe just add a bit of brown sugar? I like the idea of the protein powder. Have never used it, but would love trying to boost the level in certain foods, since we have 2 highly althletic boys and are always needing things to eat on the run between games.

I was desperately craving healthy oatmeal cookies, so a quick Google search led me here. I didn’t have a few of the ingredients (and was REALLY desperate!), so I substituted the following:
-gluten-free flour and gluten-free oats (attempting to decrease my gluten intake)
-banana whey protein (it tastes better with my tropical juice post-workouts!)
-for the wet ingredients, I mashed up 2 medium sized bananas and 1 over-ripe pear. Combined with 3 full eggs, that didn’t give me quite enough wet:dry ingredients, so I added 1/4 cup molasses.
-I upped the cranberries to 1 full cup and added a 1/2 cup of pumpkin seeds. No walnuts.
I’m happy to say that my strange alterations worked! My craving is satisfied and I can’t wait to eat a couple of these every morning with my tea.
I’m glad I stumbled upon you! Looking forward to more :)

Just made these tonight, they are absolutely delish!! such a perfect healthy treat. I find them really dense which left me feeling satisfied after having only one but because they were so tasty I admit I had an extra half of one :) The only thing I did differently was add a mashed banana and some orange zest! I find the zest really adds to the flavour! New fav cookie recipe, thank you so much!

I was perusing the internet for healthy oatmeal cookie recipes and found yours on Google. I’m so happy I decided to try to make them because they are wonderfully delicious and seem to have low enough carbohydrates that they are good for my Dad, who is a diabetic. They are also just wonderful for a snack or breakfast on the run, which I am always due to being a college student. Thanks so much for the wonderful recipe!!! I will pass it on to all my friends!

thank you for this recipe! Can’t wait to make them for a pre-workout snack. I will be adding the 2 bananas, molasses, 1/4c unsweetened cocoa powder, maybe some peanut butter chips, and omitting the walnuts.

I entered ALL ingredients as in your recipe, minus walnuts and adding the above mentioned things and here is the nurtitional information from a recipe calculator (by the way, myfitnesspal.com is a free food diary website that I use, it has a recipe calculator and a huge food database- great tool)

    174 cal, 29g carbs, 3g fat, 10g protein, 3g fiber, 123mg sodium each

Now those are some healthy cookies and a PERFECT pre-workout mix of carbs and protein. THanks!

Just made these for a healthy treat for my 19 month old son and myself. Didn’t have protein powder and used chopped up mixed fruit (regular and golden raisins, dried apricots, dried apples, and dried cranberries) and no nuts. They are good, but aren’t the usual “sweet oatmeal cookie.” I think up-ing the sweeter dried fruit like the cranberries and raisins would make it “sweeter.” Every bite with them tastes so much better than the other bites. But, honestly, my son loved them, which is a great treat, especially with milk for him. He kept yelling “cookie cookie!” I think perhaps I’m the only one who wants them “sweeter” because he doesn’t have the same sweet cravings as me!

I made these with a few changes. They were INCREDIBLE.

I didn’t have nutmeg so i left that out. I used a cup of cinnamon applesauce but also added the cinnamon called for . I used almond extract instead of vanilla. I used two egg whites and one whole egg to make 3/4 cup. I added 1/2 a cup of mini chocolate chips.

The best addition was I coarsely ground 6 tbsp of whole flaxseeds. Really gave it a nutty, crunchy taste. Because the flaxseed made it a little dry, I added two tablespoons of honey and baked them at 350 for 12 minutes.

They are softer than i like them but they were so dark they started to look burned. That’s just the color. Next time I’ll bake them until they get a little harder.

Less like a cookie and more like a chewy fiber bar but my 2 year old LOVES them.

since I left that comment on December 8th, i’ve made 6 batches of these cookies trying to achieve crunch and eliminate sponginess (although many people like that). the original recipe was great so i hope you aren’t offended but I have achieved crunch!

I followed the recipe except for the following:

    1. instead of whole wheat flour i ground a cup of whole flaxseeds and substituted that.

    2. instead of the egg whites, i used two large eggs.

    3. i used chocolate protein powder instead of vanilla (although i don’t think that made a difference but it eliminated the white specks i kept finding in the cookies)

    4. I added 1/2 cup of pecans and 1/2 cup of choc chips.

They look like they were burning and several times i was tempted to take them out but i cooked them for the full 15 minutes on a pizza stone. As soon as they came out of the oven i used a metal spatula to move them to a cold cookie sheet. they were crispy and crunchy. This has become my new favorite oatmeal cookie. Thanks so much!!!!

These were quite tasty. I did not have apple sauce so I used canned pumpkin. They came out delicious. If I had to describe them to someone would say they taste healthy, hearty, and delicious all in one, and they taste better than they look inside and out.

    Hi Sonia,
I’ve just had a go at baking these cookies- they didnt turn out quite like yours and i found that they didn’t have a whole lot of flavour- was wondering where i went wrong?? i decided to omit the protein powder because im not a huge fan and then somewhere along the way must have gone abit wrong because the flavour is quite bland?
Just wondering for next time i try them!

Just wanted to say that the recipe turned out great. I added a couple TBS of organic coconut sugar, and a touch of organic maple syrup. Yummy. I also added some EVOO and it really gave the cookies some moisture (you could use any oil to your liking I woud think) Delicious. Thank you for the recipe.
