Apple, Goat Cheese and Walnut Pizza
OK, I know, it sounds weird. I admit. I wasn’t even convinced myself, to be honest. But seriously, apples and cheese go so well together, it was a winning combination. Surprisingly good, I might say.
Of course, I didn’t use any tomato sauce! All I did was sprinkle the dough with a dash of olive oil and grated some fresh nutmeg on it, then I topped with mozzarella, super thin Red Delicious apple slices, added some goat cheese crumbles, chopped walnuts, and right in the oven it went.
When it came out, I sprinkled some chopped fresh rosemary and fennel leaves on top. Oh, and I had put a little bit of fresh rosemary in the dough as well. This, was one decadent pizza. I will definitely keep this one in my “winners” pile.
Go ahead, give it a try! If you do, make sure you let me know how you liked it!
DOUGH
TOPPINGS
- About ½ tsp olive oil
- Freshly grated nutmeg, to taste
- 1 Red Delicious apple, in very thin slices
- 100g low fat Mozzarella cheese, grated
- 15g walnut, chopped
- 25g goat cheese, crumbled
- 1 tsp fresh rosemary, chopped
- 1 tsp fresh fennel leaves, chopped
INSTRUCTIONS
- Preheat oven to 500F.
- Roll or stretch dough into 10-12 inch disc and lay on a baking sheet.
- Spread olive oil and grate as much or as little nutmeg as you like over it.
- Top with mozzarella cheese, followed by apple slices, then sprinkle goat cheese and walnuts.
- Bake in the oven for about 10-12 minutes, until cheese is melted and the crust takes a beautiful golden colour.
- Take pizza out of the oven and sprinkle fresh rosemary and fennel.

Brilliiant combo. Can’t wait to give it a try.
Hehe, thanks! Glad you think so. Let me know how you liked it when you do! :o)
You don’t have to sell me, it sounds delicious! Gorgeous, too.
Thanks Shirley! Much appreciated! :o)
What a beautiful alternative to a tart. That flavor combination always gets me. Congrats on making it to the Top 9!
Thank you much, Adriana. I didn’t even know I had made the top 9 yet! Will have to go check it out! :o)
Great pizza, loved the topping of apples and walnuts. Will surely try this recipe.
Thanks Sonia, glad you liked! Make sure to let me know how it turned out for you if you try it!
This sounds so very good.
I would change the cheese though to a good stilton or even a blue cheese instead of mozzerella
. Maybe use a sweet apple.
But I will surely try your version as well.
Funny, I hesitated between goat and blue cheese for a little while and finally decided on the goat because it needed to be eaten quickly. I think blue cheese would work wonderfully as well. Or a nice sharp cheddar… Or pears instead of apples, for that matter… oh, the possibilities!
Looks AMAZING… looks almost like an apple-pie rather than a pizza!… Setiously delish… will give it a try!
It might look like an apple pie, but it’s definitely not dessert! It truly is a decadent, although very different, pizza. Thanks for the great feedback!
Pizza is still one of my favorite foods and I love the flavors you’ve combined here! Congrats on the Top 9!
Thank you, Priscilla! Like I said, I had my doubts at first, but I was seriously a winning combination. Can’t wait to have it again!
I love unusual pizza topping combinations, and this one sounds like a total winner (then again, how can anything with apples and cheese be bad?)…. I bet it would be really delicious with pears instead of apples, too. Totally worthy of a Top 9 post!
Thank you so much Isabelle! Totally agree, apples and cheese are a match made in heaven, you just can’t go wrong with that match. Pears would also be very good. I’ve tried it before with chicken, walnuts and parmesan shavings. That too, was pretty yummy! 🙂
Wow…nice blog. Do you take all your own pictures? If so, what camera do you use?

Thanks Elizabeth for such great feedback! I really appreciate! To answer your question, yes, I do take my own pictures and I use a Rebel XT. I will make sure to check out your blog too, as soon as I have a minute. 😉
Your thinking is like mine!
Don’t hesitate to try Stilton.
Very nice english cheese and pairs beautifully with apples.
Thanks! I will keep that in mind for my next pizza! 😉
this looks delicious! can’t wait to try it
Thanks! 🙂
Reminds me of a pear/arugula/truffle oil/taleggio pizza I’ve had. Congrats on your top 9!
Yum! Sounds good! And thanks! 🙂
While Apples, Goat cheese and Walnuts are usually found mingling in my salads why not toss them on a pizza?! Love it! I want a bite right now because it’s 4 pm and between meals! I like the pear idea another wrote, or adding arugula (cause anything with arugula, cheese and apples works as well!).
Totally Top 9 worthy! Congrats!
Thank you very much! Arugula is another classic ingredient that I like to use on my pizzas. There was actually some on my Chicken, Pear and Walnut Pizza. I just loooove arugula. And I totally agree, it works so well with apples or pears, cheese and nuts!
I’m tempted to try this, sounds like a dessert pizza!
It might sound like it, but it’s definitely not a dessert pizza. I guess it qualifies as sweet and salty, but the sweetness from the apples is very subtle. Definitely not your standard all dressed, though! 🙂
I might give this variant of the classic combination of pear, walnut and blue or goat cheese a try.. I had forgotten how I used to make walnut and goat cheese pizza (well, what to add other than the two toppings) when I found this suggestion. My traditional way, I realized, is with caramelized onions (and goat cheese and walnuts, of course): it tastes SO good!
Well, if you do give this variant a try, make sure to let me know how you liked it. Caramelized onions sound good, too! I might give that a go sometime…
I made this for dinner tonight. It was easy to make and delicious. I’m adding this recipe to my often reoccurring recipe list.
So glad to hear, Jo! Thanks much for letting me know, I truly appreciate that! 🙂
Used to make this pizza when you first posted the recipe and always enjoyed it. Have thought about it recently and was glad to be able to find the recipe so easily after all these years. I also enjoyed adding a balsamic reduction drizzle after taking it out of the oven. Can’t wait to make it again!
I own a winery. We are making this for happy hour. I’m going to use flat bread and see how that works. Excited to try this. I’ll let you know!
nice, i always love apple goat cheese
